Helmet - Wear an approved helmet.
Riding without a helmet accounts for the majority of bicycling
injuries and fatalities. |
| 2. |
Lock - "U" locks are recommended
as a strong deterrent to thieves. Lock your bike in a conspicuous
location and to something immovable. Loop the lock through the
bike's frame and at least one wheel. |
| 3. |
Lights - Use a front white light
and a rear flashing red or amber light. California law requires
that you use a light for nighttime rides. |
| 4. |
Clothing - Special cycling clothes aren't necessary but may offer more comfort. Avoid loose, heavy clothing and instead, layer your clothes. Wear jackets that can be unzipped or loosened as you warm up. Gloves can protect and add comfort, as well as keep your hands warm. |
| 5. |
Fenders - They add weight but minimize
splatter from wet road surfaces. |
| 6. |
Repair Tools - Carry a frame pump,
spare tube and tire. |
| 7. |
Racks & Bags - Either packs
or special racks are handy ways to carry work clothes and papers. |
